Frequently Asked Questions
How many vehicles do you need for fleet insurance?
Most UK insurers write motor fleet insurance from two vehicles upwards, though some schemes require three or five. Cars, vans, trucks and minibuses can all sit on one policy, and small schemes (typically 2–15 vehicles) are usually branded “mini fleet” (CoverTrade, Allianz). Household multi-car policies are a separate product and don’t qualify as business fleet cover.
How much does fleet insurance cost per vehicle?
Expect roughly £500–£1,400 per vehicle per year for a standard car or van fleet (£42–£117 per month), with most small businesses landing at £850–£1,100. HGV fleets run £2,000–£5,000 per vehicle. Claims history is the biggest rating factor — a loss ratio above 70% can trigger renewal increases of 30% or more.
What's the difference between buildings and contents insurance?
Buildings insurance covers the structure of your home — walls, roof, fixtures and permanent fittings — while contents insurance covers your belongings, such as furniture, electronics and clothing. Most lenders require buildings cover as a condition of a mortgage, but contents is optional. Many insurers offer combined policies, which are usually cheaper than buying the two separately.
Can I get home insurance if I live in a flood risk area?
Yes — Flood Re, a joint industry and government reinsurance scheme, makes flood cover more widely available and affordable for households at high flood risk, and it is designed to run until 2039. Not every insurer participates, so use Flood Re’s insurer-finder tool to identify participating brands. Properties built after 2009 are generally excluded from the scheme.
Does health insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
Most UK private medical insurance policies exclude conditions you’ve had symptoms of or treatment for before the policy started — this is standard underwriting, not a loophole. Some insurers offer “moratorium underwriting”, which may cover a pre-existing condition if you’ve been symptom-free for a set period (commonly five years) after joining. Always disclose your full medical history, because non-disclosure can invalidate the whole policy.
Does life insurance payout get taxed in the UK?
There’s no direct tax on a life insurance payout — beneficiaries receive the lump sum free of income tax. However, the payout is added to your estate and can attract inheritance tax at 40% if your estate exceeds the nil-rate threshold. Writing the policy in trust keeps the payout outside your estate and speeds up payment to beneficiaries.
Why is my car insurance renewal more expensive than a new customer quote?
Since 1 January 2022, FCA rules ban the “loyalty penalty” — insurers must not charge existing customers more at renewal than the equivalent new business price for the same policy. If your renewal still looks higher, it’s usually because the underlying market rate, your claims record or your details have changed — not price discrimination. You should still shop around, because a different insurer’s new business rate can beat your own insurer’s renewal.
What happens if I drive without car insurance?
Driving uninsured in the UK carries a fixed penalty of £300 and 6 penalty points; if the case goes to court you face an unlimited fine and possible disqualification, and police can seize — and in some cases destroy — the vehicle. Registered keepers of vehicles that are insured under Continuous Insurance Enforcement rules can also face penalties simply for keeping an uninsured vehicle, even if it’s never driven. Enforcement is intensifying: the Motor Insurers’ Bureau reports the highest number of vehicle seizures in 17 years. If you’re taking a vehicle off the road, declare a SORN rather than letting insurance lapse.
